DSpace items are made up of 2 parts: The DSpace item record and bitstream. The item record is the metadata record and uses many Dublin Core fields – more than one sees when submitting through the submission form.  A Bitstream is an attached file to the Item Record.  An item can have multiple bitstreams.

Create a New Item Record

Follow the steps outlined in the Self-submission workflow.

Edit an Existing Item Record

Navigate to the page of the item you wish to edit. In the left-hand toolbar, under Context, click on Edit this item.

To add/edit files associated with the item, click on the Item Bitstreams tab.

Add Bitstream

    • Click on Upload a new bitstream.
    • Bundle: Select the default value. (If you are attaching a license agreement, select Licenses).
    • File: Choose a file from your computer.
    • Description: Enter a short file description (optional). 
    • Embargo Access until Specific Date: If the author has indicated he/she wishes to embargo the content until a specific date, enter that date in the format indicated; otherwise, leave blank.
    • Contact Email: Enter the author's email address (optional).
    • Click Upload.

Edit Bitstream Order

    • The main content files are located under Bundle: ORIGINAL. If multiple files exist in this bundle, dark blue arrow buttons will appear to the right of each file. Use the arrow buttons to adjust the file order
    • Click Update bitstream order.
    • To save and return to the item page, click Return.

Edit Bitstream Description

    • Click on the description you want to edit.
    • Change the text in the description field as desired. 
    • Press Save.

Remove Bitstream

    • Check the box next to the file(s) you wish to delete.
    • Click Delete bitstreams.

To add/edit descriptive information about the item, click on the Item Metadata tab.

Add Metadata

    • Under the Add new metadata heading, select the appropriate field from the drop-down menu and type the value in the box below.
    • Click on the Add new metadata button.
    • To save and return to the item page, click Return.

Edit Metadata

    • Scroll down to find the metadata field you wish to edit.
    • Edit the text in the the Value column as necessary.
    • Click Update.
    • To save and return to the item page, click Return.

Remove Metadata

    • Scroll down to find the metadata field you wish to remove.
    • Check the box in the Remove column next to the appropriate field.
    • Click Update.
    • To save and return to the item page, click Return.
