PREservation Metadata Implementation Strategies (PREMIS):

PREMIS is an initiative to develop a set of core elements for preservation metadata for the purpose of long-term preservation of digital objects. Essentially, it is an attempt to move the OAIS model into a more formal, implementable framework.

Preliminary recommendations of this group which include some metadata element proposals may be found in the report Preservation Metadata and the OAIS Information Model: A Metadata Framework to Support the Preservation of Digital Objects <>.

The final report, data dictionary, and XML schemas are available on the PREMIS working group web site <> and the Library of Congress' PREMIS Maintenance Activity web site <>.

One nice thing about PREMIS is that it assumes a file must be kept in context to be useful, so in addition to detailed technical metadata, they have a language for describing relationships between files/records.
